David, I don't know how to reach you via your user page here, why don't they have an email link? Anyway I am looking for more information on the USS Ticonderoga, specifically anything around the Kamikazee attacks in Jan 1945 in which my uncle was killed. Can you point me to some good sources? - ksmiley@kc.rr.com Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.4.193.228 (talk) 14:59, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey David :)

[edit]

I have created a new navbox example that could be used instead of the Alphabetical and List of Ships infoboxes. What do you think?

Very good work

[edit]

Yes, I too have found that people are quite ignorant when it comes to lesser known military items. I have also seen how so many have no understanding of copyright and read sections that have been just lifted from books - with NO reference to them. Shameful. Well, that’s our job, I guess - to clean up and make it credit worthy.

On seeing your interests, I have know doubt our paths will cross again. If I can help on anything - RAF related that is - then let me know. --Rafbuffeditor 09:42, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Ship fate table fate

[edit]

Hi, I just noticed that a template you created, Template:Ship fate table fate, is unused and appears to be abandoned. I've marked it as deprecated, meaning it'll be deleted in two weeks' time if nobody objects. If there's a reason to keep it please leave a note at Wikipedia talk:Deprecated and orphaned templates and feel free to remove the {{deprecated}} tag from the template. Thanks. Bryan Derksen 03:37, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Gettysburg Confederate Order of Battle, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Gettysburg Confederate Order of Battle is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Gettysburg Confederate Order of Battle, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Template:Ship test depth

[edit]

A few templates you created, Template:Ship test depth, Template:Ship fate, and Template:Ship fate box 2 active in service, have been marked for deletion as deprecated and orphaned templates. If, after 14 days, there have been no objections, the templates will be deleted. If you wish to object to their deletion, please list your objections here and feel free to remove the {{deprecated}} tag from the templates. If you feel the deletions are appropriate, no further action is necessary. Thanks for your attention. Bryan Derksen (talk) 10:12, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, looking through User:Woohookitty/S, there appears to be a whole bunch of similar ship templates you created back in 2005 that are now completely orphaned. Can I clear them out en masse? Naturally I'll only delete the ones that are unused, I figure skipping the {{deprecated}} step makes sense in cases of large groups like this. Question about a possible typo

[edit]

I found what may be a typographical error in USS Vestal (AR-4)#Repairing the USS Pensacola:

  • "One has to be something of an artificer," her commanding officer recounted, ". . . to realize the problems that came up to dp with this job, such as underwater welding and cutting, which was still a fairly new thing."

I suspect "dp" in the above quote should actually be "do", but I am not entirely sure. WikiBlame identified the first revision in which this passage appears. Since that revision lists you as the author, could you check that quote for correctness? Thank you. --Teratornis (talk) 06:37, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Doctorate is a new scheme designed to recognise the people who "do all the work" on Wikipedia. It has been mainly developed for Wikipedia administrators however if you have done lots to keep Wikipedia on "the straight and narrow", including being members of different groups which help Wikipedia i.e "The Welcoming Committee. UK Legislation Infobox

[edit]

Good work on this David! Did you use rather than <small> to shrink the text for any particular reason? I have picked up User:Swid's point at Template talk:UK legislation.Cutler (talk) 21:45, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not every Act of Parliament is notable (though I think that most are). It makes sense to me to:
  • Discuss some Acts within the context of more notable Acts. For example, I have just written Wills Act 1837 and it seems sensible to put a brief discussion of the Wills (Soldiers and Sailors) Act 1918 in the same article.
  • Wrap up the minor Acts for a year into a Minor Acts of Parliament of the United Kingdom in 2008 article - like the List of recurring characters from The Simpsons article (sort of)
Now I would also like to include all the important info on each Act as per the Infobox but that leads to a huge column down the right. The answer would be to have a mini-version of the Infobox that could be hidden/ autocollapsed like a NavBox. Any ideas how to do this?Cutler (talk) 12:48, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done it - test soon.Cutler (talk) 17:45, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, it is then. I had had a quick look and thought that they came out the same but if is shorter it is definitely superior.Cutler (talk) 19:13, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You've reverted the changes I made to the way the infobox shows delegated legislation. I would submit that the changes I made were correct. "Statutory Rules and Orders" is a misleading heading - these days there are only Statutory Rules in N Ireland. In the rest of the UK its Statutory Instruments, which replaced Statutory Rules in 1948. Indeed, the page List of Statutory Rules and Orders of the United Kingdom only covers rules up to 1947. Therefore I think the general heading of Delegated Legislation is correct as it covers both the former Rules and the current Instruments, which should be subheadings. (I've no problem with the capitalisation etc changes you made). Dmvward (talk) 16:25, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of 9th Carrier Air Group

[edit]

A tag has been placed on 9th Carrier Air Group requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. LegoTech·(t)·(c) 14:42, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

US Army Transport Vessels

[edit]

I noticed that you started a list on US Army transport vessels. Do you have any source material on a 150 foot transport vessel, General Frank M. Coxe, which was built in 1922 and decommissioned in about 1947? It was used to transport personnel around San Francisco Bay with scheduled service from Fort Mason to Fort McDowell (Angel Island), and provided some services to Alcatraz during and before federal prison period. It was later converted to a luxury tour ferry and finally to a floating restaurant. After sitting as vacant hulk for 20 years, it was recently restored as a restaurant. I'm working on an article and would appreciate any ideas or sources. Thanks! --Kevin Murray (talk) 09:00, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Support of User:Enforcer

[edit]

I write in support of the user named above in this statement. I too have serious doubts about the legality of any of Wikipedia's activities under my own home state's laws (it's New York, horse racing central in the late summer). I'm not sure they're registered as required by the New York Non Profit Organizations laws. I'll enquire of this to the Attorney General of New York, Andrew Cuomo. And as to Mr. Wales not being a public figure, you're wrong. He's been in the media many times so now he has no protections of a private citizen if Enforcer chooses to sue in Florida. An NY Supreme Court justice would dismiss his countersuit in an instant if it was filed here. I'd like your opinion in this matter. 68.236.154.131 (talk) 18:45, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:C-46-commando.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 11:31, 7 August 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Wakkubox (talk) 11:31, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of List of convoy codes

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article List of convoy codes, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. A tag has been placed on Template:Ship notes table yes, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

wtf is it used for?, is it even being used?

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on [[Talk:Template:Ship notes table yes|the article's talk page]] explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. IAmTheCoinMan (talk) 19:05, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of 14th Carrier Air Group

[edit]

The article 14th Carrier Air Group has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No references

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Mr.TrustWorthy----Got Something to Tell Me? 13:07, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on 14th Carrier Air Group requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Article naming - HMS Belfast

[edit]

Hi David. I am starting a GA review of HMS Belfast (C35), and I noted that the title has disambiguation brackets (C35) even though we only have the one article on a HMS Belfast, and that HMS Belfast redirects to HMS Belfast (C35). The disambiguation brackets are not needed, are slightly problematic, so that, for example, the [[tl|find}} template has to be adjusted, as a search for "HMS Belfast (C35)" produces incorrect results, and are against the guidelines given in Wikipedia:Naming conventions. I don't wish to restore the title to HMS Belfast, without passing it by you first. I am also notifying Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships. Regards SilkTork *YES! 12:17, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the ship's website amongst other things it does appear that HMS Belfast was the first ship of that name in the RN and there have (so far) not been any other vessels with the name since it decommissioned. Consequently according to the Wikipedia naming conventions you are perfectly correct. David Newton (talk) 07:34, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Hms-london-d16.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Hms-london-d16.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Angus McLellan (Talk) 14:29, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Does this super super super short list even surve any purpose?

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts.
